Bola Moyo

Our Programs

You can find our August Program Updates from Malawi here and May updates here.

Bola Moyo currently responds to the needs of the Balaka community with these programs:

The House of Many Stories Youth Centre
DSCF0523
Our Youth Centre integrates everything from music, drama, art and debate to sports and gardening to help grow Balaka’s children into strong, self-confident, critically-minded, healthy and active members of their community and stem the tide of HIV/AIDS among the town’s young people. Many of the youth with whom we work are orphans and other vulnerable children.

ALiCE, our Adult Literacy and Continuing Education Program
ALiCE
ALiCE is geared primarily toward women who want to begin or continue their educations which were, for whatever reason, previously thwarted or denied them. The purpose of this program is to empower women with the knowledge and skills they need to make better and more independent decisions for themselves and their families.

Secondary School (High School) Sponsorship

Right now we sponsor a small number of students in Balaka as they complete their secondary school education. Our sponsorship covers their tuition, supplies, and essentials such as soap and a pair of shoes for the term. They meet regularly with our staff, and Bola Moyo provides them with further support in the form of mentorship and academic tutoring.

Your donations at work!

  • $20/month covers 5 children per month at the House of Many Stories youth program
  • $40/month covers 6 children at our Adult Literacy and Continuing Education (ALiCE) daycare facility
  • $60/month will put 10 women through our ALiCE program
  • $100/month covers the cost of putting 5 secondary students through school
  • $150/month would cover the anticipated cost of the forthcoming Lioness Girls’ Empowerment program (fall 2009)

WHERE WE’RE HEADED:

Right now we are considering some exciting expansion plans for 2009-2010, including but not necessarily limited to:

- acquiring land in the Balaka area on which to build our own campus to host our programs in the very long-term
- starting an HIV/AIDS support network in the Balaka district for HIV+ people and those who love them
- a leadership program specifically for young teenage girls
- tour of Malawi trip for our major supporters in spring/summer 2010.

Look for more news on these soon!
